Not quite correct.... If you start a thread and it gets irreparably hijacked or destroyed in some other manner … the OP can delete (or edit) the parent post but the replies will remain (unless they too are deleted by their posters). Example... Jan 1, 2018 a Happy New Year Thread was started and the first reply was a political rant Not wanting to start the year off on that particular note, the original post was deleted and only the rant remained. A new Happy New Year thread was started and the images of fireworks and exchange of well wishes were enjoyed by all. The ranter never even noticed that the thread had died. 
edit .. if you ask them nicely the admin or moderators can and will sometimes delete a thread or change the OP Title. If you OP a thread, and someone else quotes your OP to make a comment on it, and you want to delete the whole thread, what happens to the thread itself? Doesn't it all disappear when you delete the thread?
