To be fair, in many of the films he has made he is tough type guys who are expected to have a certain air about them.
He isn't making the scripts up as he goes along. He is doing what he has been hired to do and does it well.
For variety how about The Bridges of Madison County, Paint Your Wagon , Honkeytonk Man and various other lighter fare ?
