The Declaration states, “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness….” So Jefferson was bringing it back to the notion of a religious God then as being the creator? Since this is very limiting and wishy washy, these unalienable rights are attributed to something bogus.
