Part of allowing kids to be kids is kids expressing interest in one another. For me, it began when I developed a crush on this girl in my kindergarten class. I developed several other crushes throughout elementary school before I left the 5th grade at the age of 11. It was a fairly common thing for certain boys and girls to be popular, in part, because a lot of kids found them attractive. Had nothing to do with sex.
Were you ever interested in anyone back when you were in elementary school?
I'm not actually against including hints of some kid being attracted to a certain boy/girl of their own sex, but I'm against the idea of children (as in pre-teens) dating and having "relationships" (in the romantic sense) in general and this applies regardless of their sexual orientation. So movies would need to be really careful about how they handled such matters.
Teenagers are, of course, a completely different matter and I'm 100% in favour of representing LGBT teens in film.
