Sorry man. It's totally true. I couldn't fucking believe it myself. Is it as dumb as it sounds? So dumb it makes you hope they were also laying the groundwork for a pseudo-retcon because they didn't explicitly say it was the cat or show it for sure if I remember correctly:
Early in the movie Fury's eye is injured but he can still see out of it though it's obviously bothering him. I think it was in a fight with a Skrull which would satisfy the conditions of having lost it because he trusted the person who the Skrull was imitating. Later on you see the kitty paw at it and the next time you see him it's a little bit later and he's wearing the patch. Thus perhaps it was the original wound that was responsible for the eventual blindness, his sight just deteriorated from that point slowly and the cat pawing at it later was entirely irrelevant which would explain why he's unconcerned about it lounging on his couch at the end and didn't feed it to the garbage disposal or let scientists dissect it.
