So dumb it makes you hope they were also laying the groundwork for a pseudo-retcon because they didn't explicitly say it was the cat or show it for sure if I remember correctly:
Early in the movie Fury's eye is injured but he can still see out of it though it's obviously bothering him. I think it was in a fight with a Skrull which would satisfy the conditions of having lost it because he trusted the person who the Skrull was imitating. Later on you see the kitty paw at it and the next time you see him it's a little bit later and he's wearing the patch. Thus perhaps it was the original wound that was responsible for the eventual blindness, his sight just deteriorated from that point slowly and the cat pawing at it later was entirely irrelevant which would explain why he's unconcerned about it lounging on his couch at the end and didn't feed it to the garbage disposal or let scientists dissect it. Wait... They don't actually confirm what did it?! What kind of ridiculousness goes on in this movie? This is played for laughs, you also see him refuse to confirm or deny a rumor Coulson heard that he was tortured by the Kree to give up the Tesseract and that's how the eye was lost. The cat was actually some alien like a multidimensional venus flytrap that swallowed the Tessaract which helped hide it from the Kree and spits it up post-credit. Lots of great fun was had with the cat before we found out it was definitely not a cat and its way of handling the Kree was a hilarious visual that cracked up the whole audience.
