There is no proof of extraterrestrial life, but a fair argument can be made for its existence. And those who believe it exists should certainly argue their case (even as they recognize that there may be no such life).
And those who believe in God, and think they have a fair argument for God's existence, should likewise make their case (even recognizing there may be no God). But this "cost/benefit rationale" is no argument why someone should believe. It can only make someone wish that a good argument for why they should believe existed (so that they may be persuaded, and thus reap the benefit).
"It will cost you nothing to believe in God. But it could cost you everything not to."
Sounds like an easy decision to me.
