That's odd. I actually don't like that idea. It's almost Orwellian.
It dates back to the middle ages, when a Catholic bishop figured that it was blasphemous to use the names of Roman gods (which is what other Latin languages do) for the days of the week.
Makes sense. I'm surprised the Spanish don't do it too.
