I don't know if its my absolute favorite, but I really like, "The Passion of Joan of Arc" (1928) directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer. If memory serves, they thought that all copies of this movie were destroyed (I think in a fire), shortly after it was made, but many years later they found a copy of the movie in a closet at an asylum. They played this movie either on AMC or TCM. It was excellent!
