The sequel will be a hell of a lot better. The problem this film always faced was the lack of other established heroes. We've been completely immersed in the lore of the ever expanding MCU, and CM expected audiences to go back to essentially a phase one film. No major villains, no other heroes to bounce off of; not a whole lot going on. On top of that they gave the lead character amnesia. If she doesn't know who she is, how is the audience supposed to relate to her? That approach could've worked better if they made it more of a character drama. But to try to force that story into a family friendly romp was asking for trouble.
On top of all that you have Fiege's comments about Captain Marvel being at the forefront of the MCU going forward, which only puts added pressure on the entire project. If she's going to be the new Cap or Iron Man, audiences better love this character. But she has to earn it. You didn't market Cap or IM as the next movie character audiences were going to love, it happened naturally. I take issue with the way this film was marketed as well as the decision to shoehorn her into MCU history instead of introducing her in the current timeline.
In the end, I can't say I was disappointed because my expectations were tempered going in. I enjoyed it for what it was but I can't disagree with your 'average' rating. It's not a bad film despite not making my MCU top ten. This character has a ton of potential for phase four as it's supposed to be focused more on the cosmic side of things. Perhaps an underwhelming introduction to the character, but I'm convinced the future is bright for Captain Marvel.
