They were there fighting because most of them got paid by SHIELD to fight. Steve Rogers, Bruce Banner, Natasha Romanov, and Clint Barton don't have a regular jobs like Clark Kent, Diana Prince, and Barry Allen do and aren't independently wealthy like Bruce Wayne is. Clint Barton has to support a wife and 2 young kids so without a regular job his only income comes from working as a mercenary for Nick Fury and SHIELD. So how much did they get paid? How much did SHIELD pay Captain America, Thor, Tony Stark and Hulk to go out there and risk their lives? Enough that they don't have to have regular jobs like Clark Kent, Diana Prince, and Barry Allen do.
