Agnès Varda, the pioneering, influential Belgian director, has passed away at the age of 90. She made her first film, La Pointe-Courte, in 1955 and rose to fame with Cleo from 5 to 7 in 1962. She is considered to be the mother of the French New Wave. In 2017 she was the first female director to be awarded an honorary Oscar, and last year at the age of 89 she became the oldest nominee for a competitive Oscar for her documentary, Visages villages (2018).
