THE DEVILS 1971-a charismatic, well-meaning but personally flawed leader of a society is destroyed in a scandal stoked by institutional outcasts, corrupt rulers, and scheming advisers: the outcome-the society itself is destroyed. A simple interpretation is that it is a criticism of organized religion or the power of the state over the individual, mob rule etc. but I think Russell was thinking along more subversive lines that went over the heads of Warner Bros!
