This is a detail I notice as well. I think more current actors were just never smokers, perhaps due to the increasing public warnings about it (in the USA at least). Remembering Sigourney Weaver and Bill Murray (just off the top of my head) smoking in the movies of the late 80s, they actually knew how to smoke. They weren't trying to make it look cool. I think younger people (I'm 41) don't realize how prevalent smoking was in the days past. My parents (between the two of them) were three-pack-a-day. I remember sitting in the smoking section at restuarants. Burn holes in the car upholstery. The whole deal.
I only smoke about 1-2 cigarettes a week (socially, never got the bug to do it every day), but I learned from two of the best. I think there is a try-hard element in a lot of modern portrayals of smoking from some actors. If it doesn't seem casual, I notice it right away.
Also, I got a chance to smoke a prop cigarette from a batch made for TV production. It was horrible. Maybe healthier, but tasted like burnt popcorn. Could just have been that one, but I'd hardly been able to pull off making it look smooth and casual.
This is one of those little things that always finds a way to stick out in movies for me. I know not everyone can rock a smoke like James Dean, but I notice when it doesn't look natural for the actor/character.
