It was a long process. It is called the Enlightenment. Ok, yeah while I agree that the eniightenment is the process that led to secularization I would not have said that Christians were 'in check' until much much later. I guess it's not black and white, but in terms of power and control I would consider that the church maintained a huge amount well into the 19th and even 20 th century. Just to be clear I am not nitpicking, I am just interested as I have never really thought too hard about the process. Of course the Church's secular power took a huge blow beginning with the Protestant Reformation. That secular power didn't disappear overnight, as, for example the Inquisition dragged on well into the 19th century.
