I never quite got why Mary Magdalene was a candidate for marriage anyway.

The better options would be Martha or Mary, the sisters of Lazarus.

Some people have believed that Mary, the sister of Sts. Martha & Lazarus & St. Mary Magdalene were one & the same person. That's probably how St. Mary Magdalene got her reputation for being a prostitute: Because in St. John's Gospel, Mary, the sister of Sts. Martha & Lazarus was the one who poured expensive perfume on Our Lord's Feet.
