1984 is a okay read if you're under 20 but it's a bit straw man to me.

I think we already live in a dystopian nightmare. We just don't realize it. I don't get your comment that Orwell is not relevant to adults. It' a masterpiece. But Huxley's "Brave New World" is really where we're heading. They control us through consumer products, drugs and sex.
The idea of a small few ruling over the weaker many is as old as civilization. The world is, and has pretty much always been, a game of hungry hungry hippos and a feeding frenzy. Orwell is always relevant but you don't need to read it to know what it talks about. That's why the French executed their king, that's why the Bolsheviks murdered the Tzar and his family. People make light of 1984 and joke about it today.
And the fact that we joke about it, is because people aren't directly suffering for it. If we had to worry about being dragged off to a gulag is we committed thought crime, it'd be a different story. But BNW is way more shrewd since it gives people what they want: stuff. People are okay with Benzos making billions because we get stuff. We don't care about the NSA even thought we whine because it has no direct impact.
What China is doing is just as much BNW as it is 1984. Russia and NK are 1984 but China is smarter because they give other countries money. It's a way of control without them knowing, or more importantly, caring.
That's something I learned about people. People don't care about things that don't affect them. Crap all over people when Hitler was coming to power as much as you want but we're really not so different today. Every day, North Koreans are trapped in their shitty country, people are beheaded in Saudi Arabia, gureilla civil wars take place in African all the time, Venezuela is bleeding.
What are you going to do about it? Nothing. Like everybody else. What would you think of someone who wants to solve all these problems? If they're a kid, they're cute. If they're an adult, they're nuts.
My point is that people care about their own. That includes themselves, their families and their friends. As long as someone gets money, stuff and is safe, that's what matters and BNW gives that to them.
