'Horror movie' can a subjective label. I personally found Gibson's Passion of the Christ pretty horrific, for instance. Also it is not clear whether your proscription also applies to films of terror as well as horror - or those films (like those of Val Lewton, say) which eschew explicit horror for dread and suspense. Or what about those horror films which are not at all horrifying, the teen-friendly pap which continually clogs the straight-to-DVD shelves? Or, come to that, films in which the horror is there as part of a strong moral message, a necessary representation of evil, shown as a warning from history or to deliberately repulse us - Son of Saul for instance?
