About 2 or 3. In the past I’ve had a shower first to clean off, then had a bath so I wasn’t dirtying up the water (apparently that’s how they do in Japan). I don’t do that all the time, though. The protocol in public bath houses in Japan is that you are supposed to clean off before you go into the large, communal pool. For that, you are supposed to sit on a small stool, soap yourself up and then use a hand-held shower to clean up. It’s a bit strange at first to shower yourself while sitting down, but after a few times I got used to it and started enjoying it. You are definitely not allowed to go into the pool with any soap on your body.
