It is considered as the landmark American musical! It was the first musical which combined the book ( script/dialog) and music in a seamless way which paved the future for modern musicals ( theatre or movies). It opened on Broadway in 1943 and is still being revived either professionally or in high school musicals. The film adaptation was released in 1955, with Gordon McRae and Shirley Jones. In 1998, a revival with a new dramatic depth was introduced by the famed British director Trevor Nunn for the Royal National Theatre...and it has made the musical gain wider audiences. It also introduced a new actor to the world, and here he is performing the opening song from the musical ( not the musical itself as it had not opened when he made this appearance) for a tribute concert for Cameron Mackintosh. We all know him -- his latest movie just grossed $ 600 million worldwide, although it was not a musical Among the people who saw him onstage in London when the musical actually opened was the producer who would help introduce him to international audiences ( and 17 years later is still the producer of his latest movie, LOGAN), named Lauren Shuler Donner ( who also helped launch the career of Marvel studio chief Kevin Feige)! But this performance would lead to a career in film and theatre, in action/drama/musicals/rom-coms! And OKLAHOMA! lives on!
