Neo's story has been told, but that is a world that is extremely rich and lends itself to an expanded universe. Like I said, it would have to be different and new in some way. If they bring back the old actors and try to somehow reboot the Neo story or write around his death, it's going to suck. Horribly. However, like you said, there's enormous potential for good stories within the Matrix universe. I think The Animatrix and Neil Gaiman's Matrix short story are ample proof of that -- and proof that there's much more room for the story to be better if it doesn't have to be tethered to Neo's storyline and the whole Zion thing. I always thought it would be interesting to tell a story about a kid who's freed from the Matrix, but can't let go of his old life, his family and his friends, so he often logs into the Matrix just to sit in a car staring at his old home, watching his family and his best friend from next door. Of course, they would think he died somehow, or disappeared. And then he reveals himself to his best friend, tells his story, and the friend doesn't believe him, thinks he's crazy, etc. And THAT is when he bends the rules of the Matrix to show his friend that no, seriously, this isn't a joke or the rantings of an insane person. Telling a story with a "regular" protagonist also reclaims some of the tension of the first movie -- whereas Neo was pretty much invincible and could do anything, our new hero would be just like any other unjacked human, who has to run like hell from Agents and could die in the Matrix if they're not careful. Anyway, supposedly there is interest in a new Matrix movie, but the report I read said that the Wachowskis are not involved, at least not yet.
