No, the Queen was an invention of James Cameron in Aliens. There was no queen in the original conception, the idea was that any Xenomorph could lay eggs.

On top of that, do they just have some sort of "instinct" to essentially work for the Queen Alien? Would the dog alien from the third one have the same instinctual thinking and do the Queen Alien's bidding, or is it too genetically far removed from the human xenomporphs to do so?

I think the way it works is that the host affects the Xeno's physicality, but the core of what they are remains the same.
