It was Roger Ebert who came up with the saying, "The brother always dies first." Here are a couple of examples:
Reign of Fire (I sorta like this under-the-radar sci-fi thriller even if the brother does die first)
Sphere (except it's a sister: Queen Latifah, who is the first to die in the undersea lab)
