I've changed fandom in 2.5 of the 4 major American sports:
MLB: Grew up a Dodgers fan after the 1978 World Series. This is the half - - I'm just as much a Padres fan as Dodgers fan now.
NBA: Grew up a Lakers fan after the 1980 finals - - now I'm a Kings fan.
NHL: Grew up a Flyers fan in the early 1980s - - now I'm a Penguins fan (but Flyers are my second favorite team).
In all three, I'm not nearly the fan I used to be. Football, which was always my true love, blotted out the rest of them after the strike/Piazza trade, the monotony of the Bulls championships, and the NHL being dumped by ESPN and not being able to see the games. I moved to San Diego (baseball), had a player from my hometown and college drafted (basketball), and a variety of small things (hockey) change my fandom.
If I start changing from the Steelers or Penn State, though, I am getting full-blown dementia.
