Yeah, Fali Ramadani, Maurizio Sarri's agent, talked long into the evening with the CFC Board and an agreement was struck to secure the release of Sarri from his Chelsea contract very soon. No compensation will be made to CFC by Juventus, I understand. Sarri has said he would welcome a move to Serie A and the chance to manage Juventus on £6.2m a year has proved too much for him. Juventus officials and Sarri will meet on Saturday.
Some CFC fans will be overjoyed to see Sarri go, despite a first season haul of EPL 3rd place finish and with it Champions League football, a League Cup Final and lifting the Europa League Trophy. Not bad. Not bad at all.
But one thinks back to that League Cup Final and the antics of keeper Arrizalabaga who defied Sarri's touchline instruction to come off the field of play before the penalty shoot-out. Kepa had already complained of cramp and was floored with the complaint only minutes before. But he wouldn't make way for sub keeper Caballero to come on. I'm sure you remember the complete lack of respect for Sarri that day. And Kepa still lost the shoot-out. That sums up the attitude to Sarri shown by many at the club who should know better. Even Willian, who praised Sarri initially, has gone off the boil with him.
Even during the squad celebration after the Europa Final victory, with three rows of players bouncing up and down, where was Sarri? My eagle eye spotted him back row last on the left, almost, it appeared to my eyes, celebrating on his own, for all the attention his players were showing him. And just as I was thinking "I feel a bit sorry for him, he doesn't look part of it, brah" what does Sarri do? He leaves his place at the back, shimmies down to the front and wrestles the trophy out of the player's hands (can't remember which player) and starts holding it aloft and dancing. And I'm thinking "That's more like it, fackin' let em know you're there, man!" So that little moment made me happy.
But his leaving makes me more unhappy than happy. Once again, I suspect Player Power at the Bridge has dislodged yet another manager who was doing relatively well. I'm not gonna name the others, we'll be here all shagging night. But this time it does seem that fans have had, perhaps, a little influence on things. Sure, losing to 0-4 to Bournemouth and 0-6 to City is not acceptable - but calling for his head?
I'm f***ed if I know who's coming next. A part of me is hoping the move falls through but it now seems set.
