Also I think the idea of purity doesn't hold up well under scrutiny. Is a field more pure if it is less messy, or more abstract, or with less division of schools of thought, or with a simpler theoretical kernel? Who practices the most pure profession, a politician, lawyer, priest, customs agent, meter maid, or toll booth collector?
