Sicario - 9/10
Arrival - 8/10
Blade Runner 2049 - 4/10
Haven't seen the rest, though I've heard great things about Prisoners. Sicario is near flawless direction of a film. Framed exceptionally well with amazing performances where the cast were allowed to make effective choices within their roles. Villenueve got the most out of the entire cast and crew on this film, no question. Arrival is understated sci-fi tension at its finest. It gives the audience something to chew on without spoonfeeding them (as Nolan, another of my favorites is often guilty of). Come to think of it, both of these films do an incredible job of handing the audience the story and letting them decide how they feel about it-- emotionally, intellectually, morally, etc. They don't preach, they don't lead; they present. 2049 while visually stunning, is poorly written and ultimately unnecessary. My low rating of the film isn't the director's fault.
