@nedkelly , you've done a nice job with the wood, all sanded and a nice grain to it. I'd be tempted to put an image on it that lets the wood show through, like a line art sketch.
You didn't say if this is to be inside or outside, and needs to be weather-proof, but a light stain would be lovely, and it could be sealed with varnish.
I did an image search - and I'm kinda picky, being an artist myself - but this image is nicely done, and could be copied to be used for the dark values.
Edit: this image is very simple, and could be drawn on easily, then gone over with a artist's watercolor brush using a dark stain.
