They used the female scientist as an amalgamation of the dozens or so of real scientists that were working on it. They did it for simplicity sake in developing characters. They state as much in the last episode. And that was a mistake. It's not believable that for a problematic for that threatened the wellbeing of hundreds of millions of people in the USSR & neighboring countries, the authorities would have assigned only two scientists.
So it made the story seem unreal.
As movie viewers, we're used to seeing global disaster films where there is a hero with one or two assistants who save the fate of humanity. But this wasn't supposed to be a sci-fi flic. It was supposed to capture a major real-world historical event. What the filmmakers should have done was show that there was a team of scientists involved throughout but then focus the story on the two scientists who had the greatest dramatic impact for the narrative. A Russian is being made where supposedly it's about a conspiracy produced by US intelligence. As you can see they weren't too happy about how their country was portrayed as well.
