Ah-ha! San An-tone! Although I don’t want to say anything against boyhood heroes Gene Autry and Rod Cameron, I didn’t make a search for “San Antone” because I have never used that nickname. Didn’t even think about it. Using it in San Antonio immediately tags you as a greenhorn and/or a tourist. They hate that term. In the 1966 film “A Big Hand For The Little Lady” (which I saw in what I believe was San Antonio’s first multi-screen venue), tinhorn Henry Fonda gets himself into a high stakes poker game with some major players. They ask him where he is headed. He says, “San Antonio” then smiles shyly and says, “San Antone.” Everybody in the theater audience groaned. Thanks for the additions to my list.
