I would try to negotiate for more, but I'd probably take money for a seat. That much may or may not have been enough, but I'd probably take the cash, ultimately. I'm 6'3" and have an achey knee, so I value leg room, but I can do a couple of hours of minor discomfort. I flew from Sydney to LA in economy, I can do a lengthy flight in a tight seat. Whether or not I was sitting with someone else might affect the decision, and it maybe I'd be less inclined if I'd already been on a flight to connect to this one, but if I'm going on vacation and that money could be put towards a good meal or experience it might be worth it. I'd always rather spend the money on the trip itself rather than the flight. As tempting as it might be, I can't imagine a scenario where I find it worth spending the premium for first class. This is fair, the only thing I'd add is that the comfort level of seats on international flights can vary greatly. I've flown coach to Paris and it was like being squeezed into a can, but when I flew to Cape Town, you couldn't have asked for a more comfortable and roomier coach seat. Within the US, I can suck it up but if I'm traveling internationally, I'm keeping my seat unless it's like how it was for CapeTown. I'm a brat! I'm in first class, however, and Cam Newton (or anybody) wants my seat, the starting point is the cost of the seat plus $5k, otherwise fuck you. In recent years, I've flown business class multiple times for longer trips and I've had a handful of people ask me to switch and only offer me the cost of the seat. Sorry pal. Again, if I'm flying to Atlanta and you want it, we can talk, otherwise it's not happening.
