It was one of the most bizarre twists in all of Endgame.
They make stuff up accordingly. In some ways, the MCU does plan the long game in ways WWE wishes they could, but then you have certain somebodies who ruin angles by getting by violating the wellness policy or almost hurting Randy Orton in the ring. The MCU can plan ahead way better, but even they do shit on the fly.
Case in point, I think Thanos as the big bad of the entire arc wasn't Joss Whedon's intention when he threw him in at the end of The Avengers. It's not a criticism but a statement of obviousness that of course they make shit up as they go along.
