I'm sure if true, they had no intention of linking Will Smith's version with the Reeves films. They probably thought he was their best bet at making a bankable Superman film at the time. Yeah I think you are probably correct. It just seems curious to me because the article specifically mentions Superman Returns and Bryan Singer.
