Watched the Pet Semetary remake last night. It was very meh. Had a couple jumps scares in it but nothing else. Jump scares are weak if that's all a movie has. Jump scares are the lone tool in a mediocre filmmaker’s arsenal. They can be effectively done, but when that’s your only trick, chances are you’re doing it wrong. Yup. The best ones are imo the ones where they slow build the tension. Where they leave you just waiting for it but at the same time you're experiencing what the character is experiencing. A good recent one was in The Conjuring 2 when Elizabeth Warren is following the Nuns shadow on the wall and into the room where it eventually pops out of the picture. Was freaky as hell, was done really well because for me I felt the tension and scare as one. When you just have a "BOOM BOO I HAVE A KNIFE!" thing it feels completely empty. Pet Semetary had 2 jump scares to it and that was it. I won't say it was bad per say but it was just very meh and wasn't really worth watching. They also seemed to shove all the "horror" aspects of the movie into the final 30 minutes so none of it really felt earned.
