I think this opens up a potential can of worms: Do we need an actor's nationality to match their character's nationality or is it sufficient that their general ethnicity matches the character's ethnicity? Because if we're saying someone of Japanese, Korean or Taiwanese ethnicity shouldn't play a Chinese character, does that mean we're also enforcing that someone who's British or Australian caucasian shouldn't play a character who's American caucasian? Many American caucasians are of British descent anyway. On a similar note, casting an actor of Chinese descent doesn’t mean the actor can’t be American. As for why they’re insistent on making sure the actor is of Chinese and not Japanese or Korean descent, part of that might be to better appeal to China. Casting, for example, a Japanese actor to play a Chinese character probably wouldn’t go over very well with China. Well the Japanese, Chinese and Korean peoples all share similar ancestors as well, same way caucasians of different countries also share similar ancestors. Personally, I don't care what nationality an actor is as long as they look the part of their character. That said, I think your point about appeal and marketing makes a lot of sense.
