A big grapefruit salute to my favorite actor on his birthday! Not
a classically handsome guy, but enormously appealing; he could be charming or sinister, sometimes in the same movie. Even when he played the cranky old jerk in Mister Roberts, he stole every scene-I especially like the scene in that film in which he meets Jack Lemmon's character for the first time and seems to have some difficulty keeping a straight face.
His cute lil' sailor dance in Footlight Parade and his role in Yankee Doodle Dandy are my favorites.
