In truth I find his rat tat tat delivery a little exhausting.... but THE ROARING TWENTIES and WHITE HEAT are top of the range gangster flics. YANKEE DOODLE DANDY probably the one that comes to mind first. But I think his best performance might be in THE STRAWBERRY BLONDE.... he was quite touching in an unlikely but successful pairing with Olivia DeHavilland .....need to revisit. caught the 1933 version ONE SUNDAY AFTERNOON recently (Gary Cooper) and was very impressed - seemed much darker in tone than the remake. A LION IS IN THE STREETS is a little neglected.
Add THE PUBLIC ENEMY, ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES, TORRID ZONE, MISTER ROBERTS and RAGTIME to make a Cagney top ten.
