There was the 1949 film Reign of Terror aka "Black Book" starring Robert Cummings and Arlene Dahl. It was a thriller where a heroic aristocrat races to acquire a vital MacGuffin while chased by Robespierre's agents. It was on a lower budget than other historical dramas and unfortunately that shows. But still gripping stuff.
