While I personally think that the 'Drama' genre is the safest all around bet for finding a quality movie in the long term I do still find some quality action movies a fair amount that are among my favorites in a given year.
hell, some years a action oriented movie is my #1 movie straight up as just looking back over the years real quick from 1990 to date, a more action oriented movie was my #1 movie of the year three times...
-Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015)
-Skyfall (2012)
-Running Scared (2006)
there might be a little more depending on where one wants to draw the line for 'action movie' but I tried to stick a bit more strictly in that genre for the three I listed above.
but if I extended that to a Top 5 of a given year (since it seems they nominate at least 5 movies in a given year for Best Picture at the least)... there would be a fair amount more making the list.

Yeah, because they are more concerned with politics than just picking solid movies straight up that they enjoy watching the most.
I would like to see what those in the academy truly like watching the most in a given year if they put their politics aside and just pick what they honestly like watching the most. because that's all that really matters in the long term is what movies people tend to enjoy the all around most.
They only care about the dramas.

The Academy has a narrow, self-righteous idea of what constitutes art.
