The love term gets misused and over-used. These guys did in a loose sense love each other, but much of what they had with each other was driven by lust and Elio flirted with and pursued Oliver. He was on the verge of becoming a man anyway and was an exceptional young man due to his talents and intellect. The context of the era and country it was set in, the age gap was negligible. Armie Hammer could have easily made Oliver appear sleazy, but it is to his acting credit that he didn't.
I did find the film a bit slow and semi-pretentious, but still interesting and involving. I liked it overall. It was pretty moving. I was surprised at how good Archie Hammer was. Armie Hammer gave the film its dignity and heart. He was the warm anchor of the film, and while Oliver was gifted with high intellect, looks, charm and a fine appreciation of art and culture, as revealed near the end, he was also passively suffering and put upon. He was given a chance and opportunity to release his inhibitions with Elio, who was also his intelligent match, if only for a fleeting amount of time. Like said about our connections\relationships with others....for a reason, a season or a lifetime.
