Dalton represents the old and the elite, and the hippies/Manson family represent the new and progressiveness. They are shown to hate each other throughout.
Cliff is a working class stiff caught between, who has the option to join the hippies, but turns them down to continue his life of servitude to the elite, eventually leading to him fighting and killing the hippies in defense of his master. His reward is to be called a friend, while his master soaks in the glory with the other elites despite not really doing anything.
