I finished the Godfather -- so much dead weight characters like the doctor and Johnny Fontaine's friend.
There's even a discussion about abortion that sure seemed like a political insert.
The book notes say the Godfather movie was the first to have a criminal organization depicted from the inside but this is not accurate. The Brotherhood 1968 --a Paramount film--has the same basic plot as the Godfather and the end notes to the book say Puzo met with Paramount executives when he had only written 100 pages which tells me--he certainly knew about the Brotherhood. Perhaps the Godfather was intended as a remake-reboot of the idea from the beginning.
