"Us" vs "them" outlook on just about everything which is made worse by the politics that has everyone on edge. General lack of common courtesy on-line and off. The idea that being rude and crude is the same as being funny. Anonymity and no repercussions for ill mannered behavior. The view that being nice is the same as being weak. The ability to take what you want to say to your boss out on total strangers. any or all of the above ?
I would say all of the above, plus some additional ones, sadly. Throughout history, there have always been wolves in sheep's clothing, and the Internet has just made it all that more convenient. Anonymity, the ability to change an ID or avatar and appear as another personality is so easy, and yes, there are certainly ones who have an agenda behind it. Determining those who are genuine is more and more difficult to do, even IRL. I finished a book several days ago that scared the crap out of me. Some extremist had set up a blog, promoting one view point, but the intent was to track down people with that view point - who to target, and not in a good way, because the extremist held the opposite view point. Heads up, all of you on the Politics Board. As vegalyra pointed out, "internet "news" has further eroded people's sense of humanity and the respect for differences of ideas." Our genetically reinforced 'fear of the other' is still going strong and, in my opinion, sadly will always be a factor. I don't think humans can evolve past it enough for us to have a world where different people can co-exist. Eventually it will be our downfall as a species. Yeah, I know, I'm a real 'optimist' this morning. I've had a lousy couple of days. The more I see of the depressing stature of people, the more I admire my dogs. Alphonse de Lamartine
