I think 24 hour news services started this in the 1980's, but internet "news" has further eroded people's sense of humanity and the respect for differences of ideas. I personally enjoy hearing about people's takes on various films even if I don't agree with them but then again I have a "humanities" degree (History) and have always been open to different positions on things. Heck, I don't know how it even happened given that both my Dad and Uncle were brought up by my grandparents, but one is just a half step away from card carrying communist and the other is a die-hard Republican.... haha. Those dinner table conversations are always interesting. They always seem to stay civil though (usually). I don't know what CNN or Fox News has to do with discussing movies on the internet. When I first discovered IMdb, long after the 1980s, I could spend hours there having conversations about TV and movies. Even when I ventured into political or religious territory, I could still have a conversation. Even when it got heated, it rarely was like it is now. Now, the conversation can't even take place. I've screaming at people (on the net) and them me in the past, but we were trying to prove each other wrong. Now? The conversation is gone after the first response. Either people legitimately lose it or are intentionally trolling someone because they enjoy it. It's pathetic. This only became bad the last few years of IMDb imo. I noticed it sometime around the release of The Force Awakens. It got really bad then.
