Well I know in terms of hardware SNES is superior as Genesis has weaker hardware. I know that does not guarantee SNES is a better system since it ultimately comes back to the games. but in terms of controller layout... for games like Mortal Kombat 3 etc, the Genesis controller is superior due to the 6 button layout on the surface where as SNES your forced to use the trigger buttons since it's only got four buttons on the surface which is not as optimal. but speaking of Mortal Kombat 3 etc, you can see there is more system slowdown on Genesis which, from memory, was especially noticeable doing Kabal's groundsaw paired with his usual combo. but short of the controller being better on Genesis, the SNES version was all around better. but nowadays... I strictly stick to the MAME version which is the Arcade version which is the best version available. still, I can't say I have a clear favorite between the two systems. but I want to say off the top of my head I got more use out of the Sega Genesis back in the day. I played better with the triggers than the six-button layout. I'd have to give the edge to the SNES just for the classic games I still replay and discover to this day.
