The really weird thing about this film is that it comes from the director of the Hangover films, Due Date and the Starkey & Hutch remake (Todd Phillips)! Absolutely no CV for making the type of film this seems to have been created as, i.e. an arty / sophisticated "directors" piece.
It's almost exactly like that Green Book film coming out of absolutely nowhere from the director of Dumb and Dumber, Something About Mary, Shallow Hal, etc (Peter Farrelly).
It makes no sense! I'm figuring they sat at a table one night having a bet that they could have a hit serious film simply by following a formula - one guy goes for the simple race relations old / younger driving Miss Daisy style effort and the other goes for the gritty King of Comedy / Taxi Driver styling. Boom! All of a sudden the two National Lampooner's are sitting on Oscar gold! I'm sure it's an in joke that they're both laughing away at...
