Oh yes, I really wanted a LD player back in the day, but it wasn't gonna happen. Then about 10 or so years ago, there was a guy selling his Pioneer player and 100 plus discs including the closest to theatrical releases of the OT, I couldn't pass it up for $100. Yeah. For the early part of DVD's lifecycle, LDs were still considered to be superior. And DVD's never had uncompressed audio like LD. That said, I can't hear the difference. Unfortunately, I don't think any LDs are animorphic, so they're probably almost all pretty much unwatchable on today's 16:9 HD TVs.... They play decently but not perfect on our 37" Panny plasma that I've kept for so very long that I hook it up to. It's not as good as an old Trinitron for the purpose, but there was no way I was going to continue to lug those boat anchor CRT's around just for when I felt nostalgia, lol.
