Jaws would top this list if I thought it was horror but I've always thought it an adventure film. 1. Alien 2. Halloween 3. Invasion of the Body Snatchers 4. Dracula - looking forward to finally seeing a cleaned up version of this film in November 5. The Night Stalker - a tv movie but one of the best vampire movies I've seen 6. The Omen - love the direction in this film, the performances, the Goldsmith score 7. Black Christmas - a very creepy effective horror film 8. Suspiria - visually stunning and I love the score, some unforgettable imagery 9. Carrie - this could move up as I haven't seen it in ages and it was on tv, full frame, and I was so young I thought it was a movie about possession, it was only after reading the novel as an adult I realized I was wrong all that time, getting the Scream blu ray tomorrow
In terms of effectiveness, The Exorcist stands alone, one of the few films able to create an atmosphere of genuine evil that really got to me, but it is not a favorite because of that, I recognize its brilliance, nothing else like it
Texas Chainsaw Massacre - I watched it the one time and I found little to enjoy about it but I can't deny it's an effective film
