Hard Times (1977) An excellent ! 4 part British mini-series..Was first filmed silent in the UK in 1915, status unknown ?
Hard Times 1854 first appeared in Dickens's own weekly publication Household Words, to boost sales it was originally published in weekly instalments and boost sales it did !
The novel and faithful adaptation from Arthur Hopcraft tells the story of Thomas Gradgrind and his dutiful daughter Louisa against the backdrop of the industrial north. Unlike his other London based tales Hard Times is set in fictional Coketown, partly modelled on the industrial mill town Manchester, which is where the serial was filmed. The book reflects English society and satirises the social and economic conditions of the era.
Dickens wished to educate readers about the working conditions of some of the factories in the industrial towns of Manchester, and Preston, and in his own words he hoped to.... "strike the heaviest blow in my power"
