Sissy Spacek was born to play Loretta Lynn. As she was Carrie and Pinky. Lynn though, being a real life human being, was very fortunate that Spacek did her life justice.
Could you imagine anyone other than Faye Dunaway as the one and only Mommie Dearest?
Yes, good call, Toasted Cheese! There is something very, very deep going on with Faye's interpretation of Joan Crawford. Dunaway touched on nerves and really delivered an extremely brave performance... She is absolutely fearless here and there is also something going on about how Dunaway does NOT like to talk about that movie. She knows she bared all and she's embarassed by how she exposed herself in the movie. It was almost like she was undergoing some kind of catharsis by playing - what Pauline Kael called - "the Gorgon Joan". I am not all that big a fan of Dunaway, but it is impossible to not acknowledge that this was a very special performance, indeed. She is soooo intense. kind of terrifying even. And totally addictive. Also, I think it is FASCINATING how Faye got lots of pans and slams from the critics, and yet at the same time she came in SECOND PLACE from the New York Film Critics Award and The National Society of Film Critics, so that just has to mean that Faye's performance caused a lot of CONFUSION regarding what is a great performance and what is an awful performance. I mean, second place from the two most esteemed critics' groups is, I think, pretty significant.
